How do you get a perfect cook on the grill?
The 1.5x ceiling and the lava shortcut come from two separate guides; the grill master's own dialogue explains why cooking is worth doing.
For Dazed Games’ How to Fish, released on Steam on 20 August 2026 (app 4001890) — not real-world fishing.
Quick Answer
Hold F while the fish is over the flame so the inspect panel stays open, and take the fish off the moment the cooking multiplier reads 1.5x. Past that point it keeps going, the fish turns solid black, and the value collapses to zero. On the volcano island you can skip the timing entirely: dropping an item into lava produces a 1.5x cook every time.
Steps
- Unlock the grill first. On the grill master's island he asks for a shark before he hands over grill access, in dialogue visible on screen in KYRSP33DY's recording at roughly 01:36:48–01:36:54.
- Hold F with the item in hand to open the inspect panel. Both guides describe the same panel, which lists Value, Cooking multiplier, Weight and Killscore and updates live while the item is over the flame.
- Watch the cooking multiplier climb from 1x toward 1.5x and pull the item off the flame at 1.5x.
- On the volcano island, drop the item into lava instead. Both sources describe lava as a fixed perfect cook with no timing window at all.
Requirements / Limits
- Grill access is gated behind the shark hand-in, so the multiplier method is unavailable before that quest is done.
- Lava cooking requires reaching the volcano island.
- Charlie Pork's route adds that the 1.5x ceiling also applies to guns and other sellable items, not only to fish. That is a single report and is published here as one.
- Neither guide states how many seconds the 1x to 1.5x climb takes, so no timing in seconds is published on this page.
Common Mistakes
- Leaving the fish on the flame after it reaches 1.5x. The multiplier does not stop there; it falls away to zero as the fish goes solid black.
- Treating a burnt fish as emergency food. Charlie Pork reports that a burnt fish restores almost no health or hunger as well as being worth nothing, so burn one only when you are deliberately chasing the burnt-fish achievements.
- Expecting lava to need the same timing as the grill.
- Assuming the grill is usable from the start of the game.
